Your Own Dog Food

May 28, 2012 § 7 Comments

I’ve come to the conclusion that if you want to be healthy and stay healthy you have to pretty much make everything you put in your mouth. There are just too many additives and chemicals in the simplest foods to eat on a daily basis. I feel the same way about dog food.

We hear all the time now about contaminated pet food. Dogs and cats becoming ill and dying from their food, which is not food at all but petrified pieces of corn and soy and much, much worse. Why this isn’t a crime is unbelievable.

So I’ve now added to my kitchen repertoire the making of dog food. I know exactly what’s in it and it is actually cheaper than some of the better quality foods out there. There are some good manufacturers but they are really expensive, especially if you have two dogs, two big dogs.

I’m sure many of you will say “I don’t think so” when it comes to making your own dog or cat food. I used to think the same way. But I’ve seen the light here and now it’s nothing for me to spend a little time making sure my dogs stay healthy and alive.

I believe dogs should be on a raw diet, the way they would eat in the wild. We once adopted a German Shepherd many years ago who, when we got her, came with a box of medications for her many problems, IBS  being the main one. ( I didn’t know dogs could even get Irritable Bowel Syndrome) Her stomach was a mess.

At that time we were feeding our dogs Abady dog food, one of the first raw foods on the market in the 80’s. We immediately took Heidi off the meds and started to give her the raw food. Even we were amazed how quickly she responded. No more IBS, her coat even changed from a pale blond color to a rich, deep red. She became a healthy dog. (Think of the money saved on medications alone)

So if you want to give it a try, here is the recipe I found. It’s from the Dinovite company. There’s a video too, but the recipe here is simple: raw ground beef, hard boiled eggs and rice is pretty much it. I add some fat to it (they recommend their product) in the form of bacon or duck fat. Coconut oil is also good for your pet. There is also a recipe for cats too.

Your dog or cat will love it.

Another easy dog treat to make: buy a package of chicken hearts, bake in a low (300 degree) oven until dried out and store in jar. Our dogs go nuts for this.
